Avian influenza detected in Bornerbroek

News release | 27-01-2026 | 09:52

In Bornerbroek (municipality of Almelo, province of Overijssel) avian influenza has been confirmed at a broiler parent stock farm. To prevent spread of the virus, approximately 70,000 animals on the site are being culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

Broiler chickens

Within the 1‑kilometre zone around this infected site there are no other poultry businesses. Within the 3‑kilometre zone there are four poultry enterprises; these are being screened for avian influenza by the NVWA. Within the 10‑kilometre zone there are 33 additional poultry businesses.

Transport ban

A transport ban is in effect immediately throughout the entire 10‑kilometre zone. This means that from locations housing birds within this zone, no birds, hatching eggs and/or table eggs may be transported. A ban also applies to the removal of bird manure and used litter. These measures are necessary to prevent spread to other parts of the country. Animals other than birds and their products may still be moved to and from locations with birds, provided this is done in accordance with the strict conditions of the hygiene protocol.

The location of the 10‑kilometre zone can be viewed on the animal disease viewer of the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO).
